The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu – Your Mind Is the Real Enemy
The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu – Your Mind Is the Real Enemy
When you step under the oppressive, cursed canopy of The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu, you will encounter physical horrors, shifting terrain, and deadly traps. But as you venture deeper, you’ll quickly realize that the most dangerous entity in this conquistador-era cosmic horror isn’t lurking in the bushes.
It’s sitting right between your ears.
In The Mound, your own mind is the ultimate antagonist, actively working to sabotage your survival.
The silent sabotage of your senses
In many horror games, “sanity” is just a stat (a flashing red bar or a blurred screen that tells you when your character is scared). We wanted to create something far more insidious. In our game, there is no HUD, no warning sirens, and no UI indicators to tell you that you are losing your grip.
Instead, the game quietly gaslights you. It seamlessly alters the environment to match your decaying mental state, tricking your brain into processing illusions as absolute facts. Because there are no UI cues, you have no way of knowing your mind has turned against you until the damage is already done.

For instance, as your sanity slips, the jungle might begin to bleed. You could find yourself drenched in a localized, terrifying rain of blood that your healthy-minded teammates can’t see. Even more dangerous are the auditory hallucinations. Your brain might fabricate a distant, comforting horn call: the classic signal of a safe extraction or a teammate in need. Believing it is real, you follow the sound into the dark, only to realize too late that your own mind lured you directly into a deadly ambush.

Even worse, your mind can turn you into a danger to your own crew. Under intense psychological pressure, your teammates’ character models will seamlessly warp into shambling, undead monstrosities. In the middle of a chaotic battle, you might turn around, panic, and empty your flintlock into a terrifying beast, only to realize too late that you’ve just shot your best friend in the back.
Co-op: Your only reality check
This psychological warfare is precisely why The Mound was designed from the ground up to be experienced in co-op.
When you can no longer trust your own eyes, your teammates stop being just extra firepower as they become your only anchor to reality. They are your sanity meter.

To survive, you have to weaponize your communication. You will find yourself constantly asking your squad: “Are those bushes moving, or is it just me?” or “Did you hear that horn, or is it just me?” If a player’s mind completely fractures, they have to surrender control of their perception and rely entirely on their crew to guide them, ground them, and confirm what is real. You aren’t just fighting monsters together; you are helping each other fight your own brains.
