World of Tanks: HEAT is out on XBOX today. If you’re wondering whether this is just “more World of Tanks,” the answer is: not exactly.
HEAT is something new. Built from the ground up on a custom-developed engine, HEAT began with a simple question: what do players want from a tank game in 2026? The team playtested with a wide range of players (not just fans of World of Tanks, but players who love military thematics and fans of mainstream shooters). The feedback was consistent: they wanted vehicle combat that took the best parts of existing games and made it faster, more alive, and more dynamic.
Trading the History Books for Something New
The original World of Tanks built its identity on historical accuracy: real vehicles, real battlefields, real eras. HEAT makes a conscious departure from that. Set in an alternate post-WWII world, it gives Wargaming the creative freedom to build vehicles that are reality-based yet experimental, and a narrative that isn’t bound by the history books. The soul of the original is still here: the vehicles, the tactics, the feeling of real tank combat. HEAT just makes it faster, more intense, and more open to players who were perhaps new or skeptical about the franchise.
“By grounding the game in an alternate post-WWII timeline, we gave ourselves room to play,” says Artyom Yantsevich, Game Director for World of Tanks: HEAT. “The vehicles are rooted in real engineering logic, but they push beyond what actually rolled off the production lines. The stories and the hardware don’t have to answer to the history books, which means we can build something that feels authentic to the era without being constrained by it.”
How HEAT Plays
Players choose from Agents, each with distinct abilities and roles on the battlefield. A roster of speculative vehicles, grounded in real engineering but freed from historical constraints, gives the game a look and feel that’s distinctly its own. Your tank is yours to shape: experimental modules, weapons systems, and equipment let you tune your loadout match by match. Classic World of Tanks players will recognise the tactical depth immediately, while players new to the franchise may find it easier to jump in.

Built for Replayability
Players will drop into 5v5 skirmishes or 10v10 clashes across eight maps, each built around a real-world landmark reimagined through HEAT’s alternate-history lens. Four PvP modes (Hardpoint, Control, Kill Confirmed, and Conquest) keep sessions fresh. Versus AI and Firing Range modes give you room to experiment with new Agents or dial in a build before taking it online, and respawns keep the action constant while allowing for more experimentation and bolder strategies.

Why World of Tanks Players Should Give HEAT a Try
If you’ve spent time with World of Tanks, you’ll feel at home in HEAT. The tactical depth is still there, as is the satisfaction of a well-read engagement. But HEAT brings a new approach, with unique Agents, more expressive and experimental vehicles, and a competitive environment built around tradeoffs and equal footing. Cosmetics let you personalise your Agent and tank, but the outcome is always down to skill.
“For the veterans, the tactical DNA is intact: reading a battlefield, making the right call at the right moment, that satisfaction is still very much part of the experience,” says Yantsevich. “But we’ve pushed the energy up, and added a roster of Agents that give players a distinct identity. We listened to a wide audience during development, and what they overwhelmingly wanted was vehicle combat that felt alive.”
World of Tanks: HEAT is available now on XBOX Series X|S and XBOX for PC, and is available through XBOX Cloud as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. Game Pass members will also get a free pack with a unique Agent and vehicle skin at launch, with more unlocks to follow as part of your membership.
